Exploding a boolean set in component parts
Hi

I have built a digital mockup of a metallic structure...

It has beams, Bulkheads and shells.

The integrity of the structure is quaranteed by weld beads uniting beams to shells and bulkheads.

I model these as chamfers anlng edges.

In order to chamfer such edges in a way that is similar to a weld bean, i must perform a boolean addition... but when I wxplode the boolean addition into subcomponents, hoping to obtaing a new boolean entity, the chamfer, ( weld bead ) i do not get such... i only get the parts that i added in order to obtain a chamferABLE part.

I want to export those weld beads as well as my structural elements as *step entities to a Finite Elements preprocessor.

Is there a way I can do this...?

Without explicitly modelling their geometry... ? just retrieve them as separate boolean entities...?

BRGDS

weld and FEA
I have never known of any FEA package that handles welds very well.
If your are going to try it, I would sketch the profile of the weld bead and extrude it the length of the seam. Then boolean everything together. Make sure you account for weld penetration when sketching it in. And watch out for sharp edges in your FEA model.
